Email 2 of 5 TDTLTO -- "The Day The Lights Turned On"
Special Edition
Hello,
Marlon here.
Last email, I set the stage for what would become
a keystone discovery. If you missed that email,
I have pasted it at the end of this one for your
convenience.
Even now, it seems like only yesterday
There I was, speaking in front of Yanik's audience.
The weight of my mum's alzheimer's, my dad's surgery,
the unreasonable homeowner association attorney.
What could I say to this audience that would overcome
all of that? What could I say that could create a
breakthrough?
I didn't say it that well back then. Maybe I will
today.
We'll see in just a second.
But first, I have to say this. You know, it's
odd how time flies. When I was a kid it seemed
like every day lasted an eternity.
Today, it seems like every day lasts only an
instant.
So much has changed since I stood on Yanik's
stage. Everything has changed and yet nothing
has changed.
I had more hair back then. Fewer wrinkles.
I travelled a lot more and had a few more
friends, who weren't, but I thought they were.
I had friends who were living then. And have
chosen to leave us. Other friends have just faded
away into oblivion, almost unexplainedley. Others
have jumped ship (and rightly so I might add) into
markets where demand still exceeds supply.
We didn't even have Facebook back then. So
everything has changed.
Yet nothing has changed.
But let's go back further than that. Like
most successful people, I had a few mentors.
One of them was Lew Williams.
Lew was trained in copywriting before I was
born by a legendary marketer named Thomas Hall.
Way back before I existed Thomas sold coaching
for as much as $10,000. He did all the things
that others have since claimed to "invented."
What's old is new again, I guess.
My point is this:
Back in Thomas Hall's day, you generated a lead,
a potential buyer, and you made a pitch.
Some of the people you pitched bought. Those
ones you called customers.
The fundamentals of a pitch haven't changed and
never will.
Psychologically, there are only 2 elements that
cause people to buy. Just two. If you GET money,
then you did those 2 things.
If you DON'T get money, you screwed up on one
of them. VERY, very simple stuff.
Simple doesn't always equate to easy. But
very simple.
Once you "get" that, then the rest is filling
in the blanks. If you believe most pitches
nowadays, they say everything has changed.
And my question is, "Which part changed?"
The part where you generate a lead from
a potential buyer?
Or the part where you do your pitch and
some of 'em buy?
The world is divided into those who can
pitch and those who can't.
So what IS different now?
I'll tell you: People today have a few
symptoms of mass alzheimer's. What I mean is,
they have almost no memory and can't focus
for long.
The part about getting leads and making pitches
hasn't changed one iota.
What HAS changed is this:
1. Getting attention today is a b&(#
2. KEEPING that attention is even harder
3. People quickly forget you if you let them
Getting attention is hard because people
everyday our email box is bombarded.
The ROOT CAUSE is this:
Supply exceeds demand in many niches and
industries, not just Internet marketing.
It's like a cancer where you got the wrong
cells (supply) outnumbering the good ones
(demand).
I read a quote the other day where Google said
more information has been created in the past 5
years than in the entire prior history of the world.
Product lifecycles used to be 7-8 years. Then it
went down to 3. Last I read they were 6 months.
Just look at Smartphones. You're only 6 months
away from being outdated.
In the Internet marketing guru business, product
lifecycles are even shorter -- about 1 month!
That means all the "players" are putting out new
products at breakneck speeds. And this is going on
NOT just in IM but really, in every market and
industry.
Which means your loyal customers are getting
bombarded with messages. And if you don't break
through the noise, if you don't get attention,
if you don't have something that stands out,
then you fade away into oblivion.
I'll give you an example....
The other day I went out in my backyard to
take a test photo with my camera. All of
a sudden a MAN appears on top of the fence!
He informs me he's from the cable company
and blah, blah, blah.
You can't even walk out into your back yard
without someone pushing a message at you!
You can't even go to a public restroom
without a sales message in front of your face!
Which leads me to his: There's something
that has JUST HAPPENED that is throwing open
the FLOODGATES -- and not even my friends in
this business "get it."
Pandora's Box has been set LOOSE.
It's NOT something "gonna happen." NOT something
"might happen."
It's something that has ALREADY happened but the
shockwaves haven't hit .... YET.
And people are totally asleep mentally and
have no idea.
I'll say it again...
Pandora's Box as been set loose. And even
"gurus" don't get it, or don't care. They are
all comfortable in the status quo.
For now I'll say this:
Money loves speed will take on a whole new
meaning.
Which brings me full circle back to our story.
There I was on stage at Yanik's birthday party.
What I put up on the screen were little doodads
I sent out via email that brought in $10,000,
$20,000 -- and more.
You can hear a part of that speech and SEE
pictures of a few of my doodads by going
here.
Now, last email I told you about the person
I was talking to at that event...someone
I didn't know was feared and revered by a
certain tribe around the world!
I thought he was just someone in my biz
who was a nice guy, well-connected and
interesting to talk to.
Several years later, I sent out one email
for him.
And it was like Pandora's Box opened.
Oh My Gosh!
My friends who are and were back then at
the top of our industry informed me in no
uncertain terms that I should have nothing to
do with this person!
I called it being blackballed. Maybe it was.
Maybe it wasn't.
I still don't know. Who did what, why and how.
But it was a hornet's nest I wanted no part of.
To this day, I'm totally mystified.
It's funny how what's old is new again.
And we often forget the greatest lessons we
once knew.
The beginning of wisdom is to know the
right things and not know the other things.
To major in majors and minor in minors.
The trouble today is with all the noise,
the messages, the pitches -- how do you know
what to know and what NOT to know?
What's really important?
Well, years later the guy I call Ted
(NOT his real name...I don't want to open
Pandora's Box again!)...
...years later this guy named Ted would
re-enter the sphere of my ATTENTION again.
And remind me of the secret of ATTENTION
getting...
And why that is DIRECTLY related to money
getting. That is, you can't have one without
the other.
That's in the next email...part 3 of this
saga.
"There is no money getting without
attention getting"
And, of course, what the Pandora's Box is
that has been unleashed....
Yet no one is aware of it...because it hasn't
yet entered the field of their awareness.
Between now and then, you'll want to mosey on
over to: http://marlonsvideos.com/pandora/
I have a video there reviewing a few of the
emails I showed at Yanik's.
There is also a special link for you.
I realize the video size may not be perfect
for all browsers.
Best wishes,
Marlon

PART ONE EMAIL RECAP
======================================
The day the light turned on -- Part 1
======================================
I couldn't believe my eyes...
What I was looking at. My thoughts
were, "Oh my gosh, I can't believe he
did that himself."
That's just off the charts cool...
...and obviously was hauling in big sales.
To say I was flabbergasted would be an
understatement...
I call it the day the lights turned on...
But before I explain what "that was"
I have to take you back in time to
where it started.
See, I was due on stage before long.
My hair looked like crap. I needed
a hair cut.
My face was worn-torn and looked like
I'd been through a battle.
I'd just flown in to speak at Yanik's
birthday party....
But hours before, I was at a long
term medical care center with my dad
where the incision for his colon cancer
surgery wouldn't heal.
Worse than that, his freaking homeowners
association served him notice while he was
in the hospital bed that his new roof
violated their standards and had to be
fixed immediately.
My mum had just been put in a nursing
home because my dad obviously couldn't
care for her while having cancer surgery.
I don't know how much sleep I'd been getting.
But I know that I had nothing left inside.
Running on empty.
Beyond empty.
But there I was, talking to this guy...
To protect his identity for reasons I'll
explain letter, I'll call him Ted.
And I think I'd met him at a few seminars.
He was best friends with a lot of my peers.
John Reese. Frank Kern. Other names you'd
know.
I had no idea this was a guy who was revered,
feared, controversial, powerful....
The kind of guy that when he walked in a room
parted people into groups like Noah parted
water....one group would be for. The other
against. No in betweens.
I was barely coherent and why he spent any
time at all talking to me is beyond my
knowledge.
I felt depressed and exhausted beyond
belief...
My dad had cancer. My mum had alzhimers and
had to be put in a nursing home while my
dad was in the hospital. And the piece of
$#(& attorney served a ridiculous notice
from the home owners association....
I had no time, energy or emotional focus to
put together a speech. But I couldn't turn
down the opportunity to speak at Yanik's
birthday party. He is and was always a class
act. And the list of other speakers was
quite prestigious.
With only a few instructions from me, Lisa had
saved the day, cobbling together some slides
of little doodads I sent out via email that
brought in $20,000 and upwards each.
Well, they weren't doodads but I don't have time
to explain now. I'll explain that part later.
Here's the picture as Yanik welcomed me on stage
with his typical warmness and enthusiasm:
http://marlonsvideos.com/pix/meandYanik.jpg
I'm not sure those in attendance had any idea
of the power of what I was about to put up
on the screen...
I didn't really have the mental wherewithal
to explain it clearly...
Next, I show doodads on the screen that
brought in more in 1 email that some people
make in a month or a year...
And Ted circles back 'round into the
picture years later...rolling larger than
life...
And I get threatening emails and phone
calls concerning the only phone conversation
I ever had with him...
But that's the next email....
Best wishes,
Marlon Sanders
